GABY DAVENPORT RECOGNIZED FOR EMERGENCE

by Adachi Amaram (Chesterfield)

Senior music major Gaby Davenport (Chesterfield) recently received recognition from the Annual Drexel University High School Competition for her photography piece emergence. Drexel University, located in Philadelphia, PA, hosted the photography concert for high school students only and the judges selected 100 photos to be put on display at the school and the top three won an award. First place received $500, second place obtained $250 and third place was awarded $100. “My photo didn’t place but it was one of the ones selected to be put on display,” said Davenport.

Gaby stated that she found out about the competition from Ms. Lyons who urged her to submit, but she was also familiar with the school because she was applying to Drexel for college. Regarding the message behind her piece Gaby said, “I guess it can mean whatever you want it to mean. I just got an idea in my head and it kept evolving… Of all the photos I submitted, I’m glad they chose ‘emergence’ because it’s definitely my strongest piece.”

Gaby explained, “I found out my photo was selected to be displayed in early December. I was really surprised and obviously excited. My parents were thrilled.” Congratulations to Gaby and her recognition, here’s to more to come!

The Appomattox Regional Governor’s School visual art majors don’t get many chances to display their artwork, so the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards generate excitement every winter.

The competition awards winning artists with one of three levels of prestige: Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and Honorable Mentions. Gold and Silver Key recipients in the Greater Richmond area had their work displayed at the Visual Arts Center in Richmond, with Honorable Mention works displayed on a slideshow.

OUTSTANDING SCHOLASTIC WRITING AWARDS

By Isabella Newman (Richmond)

At then end of January, scholastic sent out the regional results for 2019. This year, the school was competing in a different region but that didn’t stop the dragons from submitting and cashing out. Students from all grades and majors submitted their work in December and waited patiently for results. As always, Appomattox Regional Governor’s School students swept the doc receiving gold and silver keys galore, and several honorable mentions. All pieces receiving a gold key are headed to New York to be judged in the national competition. Ms. Giewont made a huge push for freshmen to submit their work, and six of the 9th grade submitters got recognized.
